Trust me! This Math Puzzle is the most popular puzzle over the internet. It looks like simple and basic math puzzle.

Well, math is all about debate and fun. If you find the answer then please check the solution and let us know what is your answer. And if there is anything you want to explain regarding this math puzzle, please comment blow.

Equation: 6^2 ÷ 2(3) + 4 = ?

A) 10 or B) 58

Math Puzzle with Correct Answer

Solution:

Well, if you try Google’s calculator, then you will get 58, but if you solve this puzzle by your own, I’m sure you will get 10.

There are two ways to interpret the question. If you evaluate the 2(3) term first, then you get 10.

If you consider this equation like:

(6^2)÷ (2(3)) + 4

6^2
—— + 4 = 10
2 (3)

In order to get an answer of 58, it would need to be represented as follows

6^2 ÷ 2(3) + 4, consider as;

= 6^2 ÷ 2 × 3 + 4,

6^2
—— × 3 + 4 = 58
2

However, In this case, there is a visual implication of grouping the terms 2 and 3. For example, if you were working out a problem like 4 / (8 + 12) and wanted to factor it to 4 / 4(2 + 3) so you could cancel the 4s to get 1/(2 + 3). Another example is something like x/2y. It’s implied that you mean x/(2*y), not (x/2)*y.

Some ask: The first one is thinking that x/y+z can be x/(y+z) or (x/y)+z. It is not! It only can mean the second one, the absence of parenthesis in math are solved by the order of operation.

But what, if an equation is given; x/yz, Then I’m sure it doesn’t mean [(x/y) × z], but only [(x)/(yz)]. If someone means multiplication between 2 and 3, then it should be written as 6^2 ÷ 2 × 3 + 4, not 6^2 ÷ 2(3) + 4.

In this question, you will have to enter the equation in a proper way. Calculators are just a program which follows the rules and formulas, it’s your job to enter commands or details of the question in proper ways.

Google’s or any other calculators, they consider the Bracket () as a multiplication sign. So, when you put this equation into the Google’s calculator, it considers the equation as 6^2 ÷ 2 x 3 + 4 = ? Which is different from the first equation.

In this case; You can’t just copy the equation and paste it into the calculator as it is. You will have to explain each term accurately. If you want to check this puzzle in Google or other Calculators then you have to write it down in proper way i.e.: 6^2 ÷ [2(3)] + 4 = ?. Because 2(3) is one number, broken down to factors, and the multiplication should take a higher precedence than the other multiplication and division.

It would be like moving ‘2y’ term, where ‘y’ is 3. Yes! bracket () mean multiplication, but also it shows that, they both [2(3)] are the same terms. You can’t just separate them and this is what you will have to tell the Google by adding the further bracket to the equation i.e. (2(3)).

So, it’s not Google, It’s US, who gives the wrong instruction to Google!

In the end, i’m not saying that the answer is 10 or 58. but it would be better if the expression was not written in a confusing way.
